Thoughts from the Usher Podium: The 2017 Laggys

Boy those Oscars huh; what a night! So much happened: Mahershala Ali ate a live bat on stage, the director of White Helmets accepted his award while being escorted by the TSA, Meryl Streep knocked down Emma Stone and stole her Oscar while screaming "not this time b***h!" This truly beats the highlights of 1975 when the dog from Where the Red Fern Grows (1974) won Best Actor!
In case it's not evident yet, I'm writing this article before the 89th Academy Award ceremony. As of this writing, I don't actually know who won yet, but as David Niven once said on the set of Stairway to Heaven (1946), "who really cares right?" The Academy Awards, for all their prestige and glitz and lack of diversity, can't hide the fact that everything having to do with the awards are very political. As a result, a lot of "winners, " win undeservedly simply because, "it's so-and-so's time," or "that movie fits into my simplistic worldview," or "I don't like that guy, he never shares his cocaine."

This is why it has been argued by some including me, that awards for the best movies of the year, should be handed out on a five-year lag; you know like National Registry Selections or job promotions in really crappy HR floors of faceless corporate entities. That way when we look back upon the movies of five-years-ago we can see which ones truly hold up and which ones haven't aged so well.
Ah hem!
This is why we came up with the Annual Laggys; an Award process that honors great movies that stood the test of time. Last year, the Best Picture winner for our first annual award went to the multifaceted Tree of Life (2011) over the self-congratulatory The Artist (2011). This year, the Selection Committee has selected a multitude of very qualified films in ten categories. It is now up to you to vote for which ones you feel should bring home the brass ring.

Keep in mind, polls are opened from February 26, 2017 to March 4, 2017.

Here are your nominees for the 2nd Annual Laggy Awards.
